UTD 2007 Rookie of the Year winner, finalists honored at School Board meeting

UTD 2007 Rookie Teacher of the Year Awards

Cohen, UTD First Vice President Artie Leichner, School Board Chair Agustin Barrera, and PTA/PTSA President Ivelisee Castro.

Six first-year teachers from the six school regions of Miami-Dade County were recognized as the 2007 Rookie Teacher of the Year finalists at an awards ceremony during the School Board meeting on Wednesday.   

“These nubies have been chosen because they represent the very best of what our future in education can be,” UTD Secretary/Treasurer Fedrick Ingram said as he prepared to introduce the six finalists and present them with a plaque.

 Ingram then announced Eleanore Quartel, a Reading and Language Arts teacher at Allapatah Middle School was the 2007 Rookie of the Year, and Nykeah L. Cohen, who teaches Intensive Ready at Miami Northwestern Senior High was the runner-up.  In addition to the plaque, both teachers were awarded 3-credit hours towards a Master’s Degree from Barry University.   

The four additional finalists were:  Bernadette Carolina from American Senior High, Chastity Abraham from Madie Ives Elementary, Aura Abadia from G. Holmes Braddock Senior, and Tangela Henry from Bel-Aire Elementary. 

The award is presented every year by United Teachers of Dade to promising first-year teachers.
