ESE Requirement:  Senate Bill 1108 Update

March 7, 2014 - FLDOE Update

The State DOE has not provided clarification or a list of acceptable courses that would meet the new ESE requirement. UTD will notify professionals once the State had defined the courses. UTD is working closely with the Florida Education Association (FEA) to identify the courses that can be approved by the State.

In the meantime, professionals who have certificates expiring in 2014 and 2015, and have the necessary in-service points, may renew now and not be required to take the coursework regarding the new requirement until their next renewal. Renewal must occur prior to the June 30, 2014 deadline. Any professional who renews after July 1, 2014 will be required to have the necessary coursework.

UTD will offer courses to meet this requirement once we have direction from the State.

FAIR Assessments

  - MDCPS District Testing
  - Over Assessing

FAIR now replaces DIBELS, ORF and DAR.  There are 3 administration periods that are each approximately 40 days in length. (See Testing Calendar) The test must be administered using a “team” approach at each school and will not be the sole responsibility of the classroom teacher. Click here

Click here to see a letter sent on behalf of Milagros (Millie) Fornell, Associate Superintendent, Curriculum and Instruction regarding FAIR implementation.

FAIR testing update.  Teachers are not required to grade the spelling test portion of the Broad Diagnostic Inventory for the second grade test as per Contract Article X, Section 1. F. According to the District Language Arts Dept., students may grade each other's papers or the school may use a SWAT team approach.

INDIVIDUAL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN (IPDP)

 - The Individual Professional Development Plan (IPDP) has been revised to be more user friendly. The IPDP is not a part of the IPEGS evaluation nor is it tied to Standard 5 – Assessment. However, the IPDP is part of the UTD/MDCPS Contract under the IPEGS Handbook and must be completed. The IPDP is a growth tool for the professional which indicates the professional development plan for the current school year. The professional can use multiple sources for the basis of the IPDP. Any revisions to the IPDP must be mutually agreed upon by the professional and the principal. It is due to the principal on Friday, September 27, 2013. Click on the link below to see a breakdown of the IPDP procedures and the link for the form. All information on the IPDP can be found in the IPEGS Handbook, pages 68-70.

UTD PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES

UTD will be offering its AFT Professional Development (AFT PD) courses at locations throughout the district. Engaging teachers and educational support professionals (ESPs) in “high quality” professional development to help improve student achievement is a major goal of UTD. Based on research with demonstrated applicability for classroom teachers, these AFT developed courses can be used for in-service credit for teacher certificate renewal.

ATTENTION PARAPROFESSIONALS and ESP’s:
An opportunity to become “highly qualified” through UTD’s ER&D Meeting the Standards for Paraprofessionals course is still available. Please call Gruselda Dowe at 786-594-0251 for more details.
