Calendar Committee met to review the Calendar Survey results and make recommendations

Unlike last year, the first draft of the calendar was “Approved” by 87% of those participating in the survey.  Although the survey results were very positive, UTD Calendar Committee members reviewed each of the 555 comments that were submitted.  Many of the comments were positive, but not all.

The Committee agreed unanimously to recommend the Proposed 2012-13 Calendars for approval and they are scheduled to be on the agenda for the December School Board Meeting.  In addition, the Committee decided to publish a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about the calendar process and conduct an information gathering survey after employees return from winter recess.

The goal of the survey is to examine a few new scenarios, such as a “fall break” around the Thanksgiving holiday.  This is one of several issues that have come up repeatedly the last two years.  Calendar changes are possible, but some would require underlying changes to how MDCPS currently operates.  The Committee wants to fully examine the desire for such a change and determine how to best proceed for 2013-14 if the bargaining unit favors such changes.  The Committee decided to publish the survey after winter recess in order to prevent any skewing of the data by conducting a survey so close to the holiday in question.
