Collective Bargaining Update

UTD and M-DCPS representatives reached a tentative agreement on health insurance, maintaining a no cost option for employee health care coverage. "In light of what is happening to other state and county employees, including salary give backs and employee lay-offs, this agreement is significant protection for our bargaining unit members." said Karen Aronowitz, UTD President.
M-DCPS originally proposed a $65 million dollar increase in healthcare costs suggesting that employees shoulder 100% of the dependent care cost increases. The tentative agreement, subject to ratification by the bargaining unit, maintains a cost free option for employee's healthcare while keeping dependent care cost increases to a minimum. Details on a ratification vote are forthcoming .
The District and Union agreed to continue the work of the healthcare committee in order explore cost savings and innovative ways to mitigate health insurance increases.
Another session of bargaining will be held on January 27th to address Race to the Top grant funding. Union building stewards will direct UTD's decision on continued participation in Race To the Top and the distribution of $14 million in performance pay at the January 26th council meeting.
The Union and the District are expected to address other important contractual items as well.
