More Than 7,000 Teacher Union Members Participate in “Get Out the Vote” Telephone Town Hall

MIAMI-DADE, BROWARD, PALM BEACH – A newly formed, tri-county coalition of teacher unions, held a Telephone Town Hall on September 24th. The hour long discussion was lead by two presidents and an administrator of the three largest area teacher unions, Karen Aronowitz, United Teachers of Dade, John Tarka of Broward Teachers Union, and Debra Wilhelm, President of the Palm Beach County Classroom Teachers Association. Together the three unions represent over 35,000 members in South Florida. The coalition is focusing on getting teachers and school support professionals to vote in the upcoming General Elections.

Topics included the Re-election of President Barack Obama, support for Senator Bill Nelson and other ballot issues including Amendment 8 on which the unions are urging members to vote ‘NO’.

The Telephone Town Hall is one in a series of events that the unions have planned leading up to November 6th. Union members are volunteering in record numbers for activities such as neighborhood walks, phone banking and working the polls on Election Day.

The next big event planned is a “GET OUT THE VOTE “ rally on October 4, 2012 at 4:30 at Miami Jackson Senior High, 1751 NW 36Th Street, Miami, FL 33142. Teachers and support professionals are urged to wear Red, White and Blue on October 4th and join in a get out the vote rally, inviting parents, community members and workers from the South Florida Area.
