Good afternoon. Today we meet for the first time in collective bargaining for the 2012-2015 UTD-MDCPS contract. Many of us on both teams have met before. Some of us are new to the process or new to our positions on our teams. We welcome everyone on both sides of the table.
Today, we are prepared to offer our salary proposals for a bold, new way to compensate our teachers. These proposals allow for the integration of a new step system that gives hope to teachers so that they can choose a career path in teaching that does not require them to leave their classrooms. It levels the increments between steps so that teachers who had previously languished for years with increments of $150 dollars see real growth in salary. And after years of promises broken, it starts beginning teachers at $40,000.
